"Ultima Fuga" (formerly "Final Approach") is a 60ft Fast Cruiser from the renowned New Zealand designer John Lidgard that was built for speed while still maintaining a very comfortably laid out yacht that has been prepared for world cruising.
Purchased in 2009 by the current owner family who have put a great deal of effort in to produce a comfortable live-aboard that can easily be short-handed, without compromising its race-standard performance in all points of wind. As part of this work he gave himself the goal of making the boat a truly self-sufficient floating home capable of sailing anywhere on the globe in any weather.
Not only does the boat have a high-capacity water-maker; it also has enough sun and wind power capacity to run it without the need for fuel, so given only a little patience in times of low wind there is no reason why this boat couldn't complete a non-stop circumnavigation.
She sleeps eight in an aft ensuite captain's cabin, pilot berth, double master and crew cabin forward with separate shower room and day head.
The second shower room has been converted to a wet room for diving equipment and a medical-standard air compressor permanently installed to provide hookah air for a diving to maintain the hull, sort problems with ground tackle, and/or catch breakfast!
This Lidgard boat should provide lots of speed for the owner. It is built in wood with one-inch Kauri skin, edge fastened and glued, covered with two 5/16-inch diagonal Kauri layers and finished with a triaxial glass cloth and epoxy. It's a rocket but a comfy one.
The boat is trimmed well. The slot is poetry in carved ivory. The feel of the helm is delicate, balanced and responsive. The spray that finds your face from time to time only increases your feeling of vitality.
The transom of the boat ahead is slowly growing bigger, and you have no inclination whatsoever to turn on the engine.
Since purchasing the boat the owner overhauled all the systems of the boat, including complete rewiring, complete rigging replacement, and revision of all systems related to: plumbing, air flows, refrigeration, instrumentation, ground tackle, dock lines, etc.
Close attention has been paid to the engine and hull too, although they always were, and remain, in excellent condition needing only ongoing care. The engine has low hours for its class and gives no problems, oil and fuel filters have always been replaced well in advance of the recommendation.
The entire rigging, standing and running, was completely replaced by race-renowned Glen Hanson of Alameda, CA in 2010 at a cost of $65,000 and has been stressed very little since.
The mid-ship cockpit has an ideal refuge for crew in foul weather (with withdrawable top cover, benches, and a deep well to sit in), during his ownership the owner installed much larger scuppers to easily handle heavy rain or wave action.
